Maurten changed the game of sports nutrition with their iconic hydrogel technology. Their Gel 100 is coveted by top athletes, but they wanted a bit more.
Now, Maurten has an even higher carb option with the Gel 160 – a 40g serving of energy in the same hydrogel technology.
Gel 160 is a bigger hydrogel option — encapsulating 40 grams of carbohydrates in each serving. The same proven technology built with just 6 natural ingredients — no added colors, preservatives or flavors. For athletes who want more energy in each gel, this is for you.
More or less – it's the same thing.
From a technical perspective, traditional gels are water and carbohydrates simply mixed into syrups, often containing added flavors and preservatives. The Gel 160 is completely different. It’s a biopolymer matrix filled with a unique blend of fructose and glucose (ratio of 0.8:1) which –as we discuss often– enables uptake of much more carbohydrates.
Maurten has solved this problem by creating a gel that contains its unique hydrogel technology, which encapsulates those simple carbohydrates and enables smooth transportation into the intestine where water, salt, and carbohydrates are absorbed.
This is slightly different from their drink mix, which requires the acidity of the stomach to form the hydrogel; the Maurten Gel 160 contains an already formed hydrogel and can be taken without water.
Gel 100 vs Gel 160:
Gel 100 and Gel 160 use the same patented Maurten Hydrogel Technology with the same ratio of fructose and glucose — 0.8:1.
Gel 100 has 25 grams of carbohydrates and Gel 160 has 40 grams.
Gel 160 is well suited to longer endurance races and sessions where fueling opportunities are less frequent. The larger format enables athletes to carry fewer sachets but still benefit from the same proven hydrogel performance.
How to Use Maurten Gel 160:
Use the Gel 160 as you would the Gel 100 (or other Maurten products). With 40g of carbs, you can take 2 x hour to easily reach 80g of carbs. This can be used interchangeably to fine-tune your fueling strategy depending on the training or racing situation.
